Vintage Fima Deruta Raffaellesco Pottery Candlestick Holder. Made in Italy 1970s-1980s. 8″ Tall x 5 1/4″ Diameter at Base, 1 lb 2. Holds Taper Candle Approx. Yellow w/Brown Slash Marks Edge Trim. Light Green Accent Top Ring and Throughout. Stem Design of Color Bands and Tassle Like Shapes. Base Band of Typical Dragon Floral Scene. The stylized dragon was reputedly painted in the 16th century by Raphael, the master painter and architect of the Italian High Renaissance. The Raffaellesco dragon has come to be known as a benevolent deity who bestows good luck and fair winds to seagoing merchants, thus the puffs of wind steaming from the dragon’s mouth. Founded in 1960, FIMA is a family-run business in Deruta. They have an excellent reputation for traditional Deruta dinnerware from their intricate, carefully hand-painted details and loyal adherence to the traditional colors and techniques. Deruta is a small town in Umbria, in the heart of Italy. It has been one of the most vital centers for the production of Italian ceramics since the Renaissance (15th century).
