The seated monkey figure embraces the famille rose vase as he gazes at you with mesmerizing green eyes. The monkey is an auspicious and lucky character in Chinese legend and mythology, with tobacco a prized commodity. The lovely Tobacco Leaf pattern depicted here was one of the most prized of Chinese Export patterns, developed circa 1780. The design shows the flowering Nicotiana (Tobacco) plant upon which a small phoenix perches bearing a flowering twig in its beak. The magnificent bird of Chinese legend is a symbol for heaven’s favor, virtue and grace, luck and happiness. In Chinese mythology, the monkey god was Sun-Wukong, the Monkey King. The pair is quite substantial measuring 8 inches tall, 6.5 inches wide, and 5 inches deep. Each weighs 3 pounds for a combined total of 6 pounds! The vase alone is 5.5 inches tall with a 1.5 inch diameter mouth. Both monkey statues are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or restorations.
